GUE/NGL MEPs Martina Anderson, Dennis de Jong, Malin Björk and Kostas Chrysogonos strongly condemned homophobic remarks made at Parliament's Civil Liberties committee meeting this morning.

During this meeting the proposal for the directive on the 'Equal treatment of persons irrespective of religion or belief, disability age or sexual orientation' was discussed.

“The remarks made by Polish ECR MEPs, Marek Jurek and Kazimierz Michał Ujazdowski, claiming that the directive would be a tool for imposing LGBT ideology is particularly offensive,” they said.

“What is ideological about falling in love?” GUE/NGL MEPs asked.  “Parliaments across Europe have all agreed on fundamental human rights and the directive is not imposing anything on Member States. Homophobic remarks have no place in the European Parliament. Today's comments just show that we need to step up action in this area.”

The GUE/NGL group is made up of 52 MEPs from across Europe working for peace, solidarity, social justice, equality, democracy and human rights in Europe and beyond. It is the only gender balanced group in the European Parliament.
