This morning GUE/NGL MEPs welcomed the Zaborska Report on the implementation of the EU Directive on equal opportunities and equal treatment of men and women in employment, while also calling for equality measures to go “from the page to reality”.

Portuguese MEP, Inês Cristina Zuber commented: “This report supports fundamental principles and measures for creating equality in the workplace. Now we need all of these ideas to go from the page to reality. In too many countries discrimination against women continues to take place. We also need to make sure that other texts approved by this Parliament do not contradict these principles.”

Spanish MEP Tania Gonzales Peñas added: “This report shows that the directive is not being effectively applied among member states and we continue to have a 16.4 per cent pay gap between men women. That is why companies must be obliged to ensure equal treatment in their workplaces.”

“Equal treatment and non-discrimination between men and women is not only an issue of justice, it's also a right enshrined in the EU Treaties. We also need other measures to guarantee the dignity of home workers and care workers, and to also ensure that there is co-responsibility between men and women.”
