The provision of free education 

Vasia Chioti: Teacher of English in primary school, an active member of the Union, whom is living first hand the degradation of  free education under the framework of crisis and the imposed memoranda in Greece.

Tackling early school dropouts

Christian Raimo: Italian teacher and writer, he works a lot on the scholastic system in Italy and about the issues it faces amongst which the high levels of early school dropouts. 

Access to education for migrant students 

Georgios Tsiakalos: Professor of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki with expertise in migration education and integration.

Assisting students that have special needs 

Pat Buckley TD for Cork East. Sinn Féin Junior spokesperson for Mental Health. Sits on an all-island steering and policy group on Mental Health service provision. Pat is PRO for the Let’s Get Together Foundation, a non-profit suicide prevention group whose work has seen a dramatic fall in the suicide rate in East Cork over the last ten years.

11.00 – 11.45: “Imagining together a Different school: comparing local experiences and best practices” 

Moderation: Liadh Ní Riada, MEP

Birke Bull: Researcher in educational science, she works on social impacts and inclusion in the education sphere. Elected as chair of DIE LINKE in Sachsen / Anhalt and a member of Landtag Sachsen / Anhalt, she is responsible for education and social issues. 

Santa Parrello: University professor and in charge of psychological activities and research for Maestri di Strada Onlus, an organization that gives support to young people and reflects on educative practices, with the aim of sustaining the idea of a school which adequately responds to the complexity of societies. 

Mike McKee: Sinn Féin Councillor from Clare. Mike is currently the Cathaoirleach of the Shannon Municipal District Council. He was first elected as a Town Commissioner in 1983, and subsequently re-elected to the Shannon Town Council at every election. He became the first Sinn Féin chairperson of a local authority in over 70 years when elected to that position in the 1990s and became the first elected Mayor of Shannon.
