Izquierda Unida (IU) is a social and political movement from Spain. It was born in 1986 as a continuation of the broad left-wing coalition that campaigned against joining NATO. It is based on the principles of feminism, ecologism, pacifism and the belief that a socialist society is the only way to achieve equality. Today IU is one of the forces that form the progressive government in Spain.
