In the labyrinth of societal structures, where success often seems reserved for the privileged few, there exists a foundation built by working people. This foundation, the backbone of our communities and economies, the working class, embodies the values of solidarity and equality that define our movement. In the face of adversity and exploitation, working-class unity and the relentless pursuit of justice have delivered extraordinary levels of progress for humanity.

From construction sites to office cubicles, busy kitchens to quiet classrooms, platform workers to nurses saving lives… our contributions are as diverse as they are essential. Today, May 1st, we celebrate working people and our labour as the heartbeat of society.

Our power lies not only in our individual labour but in our collective unity. We face attacks from big corporations and their neoliberal allies in our institutions – unfair wages, unsafe conditions, and the ever-present worry about making ends meet. But when working people rise as one, no force can stand against us. Together, we can demand fair wages and deliver better working conditions and opportunities… for ourselves and future generations. Together, we can create a world where everyone has a chance to thrive, regardless of their background or circumstances.

However, we must remain vigilant against those who would rather see us divided, those who exploit our grievances for their gain. Their rhetoric, dripping with xenophobia and hate, serves only to entrench existing power structures further, perpetuating the cycle of oppression. With their empty promises, they seek to sow discord among us, to put worker against worker. We must expose their strategy for what it is. Real change comes from solidarity, not division.

Today’s youth – crucial allies in this fight – embody both promise and struggle. Despite their capabilities, they face a world plagued by economic instability, climate emergency and housing insecurity. Yet, undeterred by these problems, they channel their frustration into action, demanding systemic change and refusing to accept the status quo. Their strength in the face of adversity serves as a beacon of hope, reminding us all that the fight for a just society is in safe hands.

Today, we celebrate our strength and unwavering determination to build a brighter tomorrow. As Chilean President Salvador Allende once said: “La historia es nuestra y la hacen los pueblos” – History is ours, and it is made by the people.
