GUE/NGL MEPs Cornelia Ernst, Alda Sousa and Dennis De Jong will voice their support for migrants, refugees and asylum-seekers' rights later today.

They will join an action organised by Amnesty International which will see four tonnes of sand deposited in front of the European Council building where EU leaders are meeting today and tomorrow.

The aim is to protest against European governments’ deplorable migration and asylum policies and practices, and highlight the reality of the inhumane and dangerous migration and asylum policies in force at Europe’s borders.

GUE/NGL MEP Cornelia Ernst said: “EU leaders must do more to protect the rights and lives of migrants, refugees, and asylum-seekers arriving at Europe's borders. If human rights are not at the heart of migration and asylum policies then the EU is simply not adhering to its own values.”

The protest takes place from 12.45 to 14.00.
