GUE/NGL MEPS highlighted the need for access to safe and legal abortion during a debate on child pregnancy following the rape of a 10-year-old girl in Paraguay.

French MEP Marie Christine Vergiat said: “The Paraguayan authorities proved incapable of protecting this girl even thought they were aware of the situation.

“Termination in Paraguay is illegal regardless of the circumstances even in cases of rape and incest. The director of the girl's hospital and the UN group which have been sent there, agree on the risks of forcing this pregnancy.

“A 10 year old girl was raped by her own step-father and is being denied the right to a termination; this is inhumane and we are incredibly angry. There is no room for political arguments here.”

Spanish MEP Ángela Vallina continued: “This is a disgraceful case. Once again it is a matter of violence against women, in this case a girl.  We are calling for justice instead of attempting to undermine the dignity of this minor.

“In cases like this health should be safeguarded, there is no justification for taking away this girl's right to be protected with a safe abortion.
