Israeli and Palestinian citizens need to recover confidence in international solidarity to achieve a peaceful solution

It is vital that the European Union puts the Middle East Peace Process at the top of its international agenda, not only by declarations but by specific and concrete actions.

Israeli and Palestinian citizens need to recover confidence in international solidarity to achieve a peaceful solution.

In this sense we very much welcome the invitation of the President of the State of Israel, Reuven Rivlin, and the President of the Palestinian National Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, to address the European Parliament.

GUE/NGL MEPs are acutely aware that the Oslo initiatives have been under threat for some time and are presently seriously at risk.

Therefore, we welcome the recent French initiative to revive the negotiation process.

There is a need that all the international actors, in cooperation with regional actors, facilitate talks between the representatives of Israel and Palestine in order to develop a peace process and work towards the two-state solution, based on the 1967 borders.

“The best way to ensure a lasting, viable peace is to have the State of Israel and an independent, democratic and viable State of Palestine living side by side in peace and security”, Martina Michels MEP, GUE/NGL member of the European Parliament's Delegation for the relations with Israel said.

Martina Anderson MEP, Chair of the European Parliament's Delegation for the Relations with Palestine said, “GUE/NGL MEPs, therefore, call on the government of Israel to immediately end all settlement and occupation activities which are the main obstacles for the fledgling peace process and two-state solution.”
