C'est avec une grande tristesse et émotion que le groupe de la Gauche Unitaire Européenne – Gauche Verte Nordique au Parlement européen a appris  le décès de Monsieur Paul Vergès, ancien député du groupe GUE/NGL et Sénateur communiste de l'Ile de La Réunion.

Fondateur du Parti Communiste Réunionnais, Paul Vergès fut un député européen notable et actif de 1979 à 1989 et de 2004 à 2007.

Le Groupe de la GUE/NGL a eu le grand honneur de compter sur son expertise au sein du l'Assemblée ACP/UE du Parlement européen, où son combat pour les plus démunis, les libertés et la dignité des peuples est resté marqué dans nos esprits.

Nous tenons aussi à souligner sa bataille sans faille pour le climat et les conséquences du changement climatique, bataille qu'il a maintenue tout au long de sa vie. Ses engagements avec les experts du GIEC (Groupe d’experts intergouvernemental sur l’évolution du climat) nous ont éclairé sur beaucoup de sujets.

Le Groupe de la GUE/ NGL souhaite exprimer ses sincères condoléances à la famille, amis, compagnons et au Parti Communiste Réunionnais.

Nous saluons sa lutte exemplaire au service de toutes et de tous, nous tâcherons de continuer son action.

GUE/NGL pays homage to the former MEP Paul Vergès

 

It is with great sadness and emotion that the Group of the European United Left/Nordic Green Left in the European Parliament learned of the passing of former GUE/NGL MEP and Communist Senator (Reunion Island) Mr Paul Vergès.

Paul Vergès, founder of the Communist Party of Reunion, was a notable and active member of the European Parliament from 1979 to 1989 and from 2004 until 2007.

The GUE/NGL Group was honoured to be able to count on his expertise on the Parliament’s ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly, where his struggle for the most deprived, for the freedom and dignity of all people remains foremost in our minds.

We also want to highlight his unwavering battle for the climate and the consequences of climate change, a battle he fought throughout his entire life. His work with the experts on the IPCC (International Panel on Climate Change) has been a true source of enlightenment to us in many ways.

The GUE/NGL Group wishes to express its sincere condolences to his family, friends, comrades and the Communist Party of Reunion.

We pay homage to his exemplary struggle for all people and we will strive to continue his work.
