GUE/NGL would like to extend its deepest condolences to the people of Portugal during these difficult hours.

Like everyone across Europe, we have been deeply shocked by the images of the forest fires and we are grieving with Portugal over the tragic loss of life.

We offer our strongest solidarity to all those who have been affected and especially to the selfless emergency crews whose courage serves as an example to us all.

GUE/NGL calls on the European Commission to mobilise all available means to repair the damages and to support the victims.
