Introduction to the cookies

Cookies are text files with small pieces of data, that are used to identify the user’s computer. Specific cookies are used to identify specific users and improve their web browsing experience. Data stored in a cookie is created by the server during the connection. This data is labeled with an ID unique to the user. When the cookie is exchanged between the users’ computer and the network server, the server reads the ID and knows what information to specifically serve to the user. Cookies enhance user experience but are also used for tracking purposes, to create statistical searches and for advertisement.

 

Introduction to web beacons

A web beacon, also known as a pixel tag, tracking pixel, or clear GIF, is a tiny, transparent, graphic image that is placed on a website or in an email. Web beacons are usually used together with cookies to monitor user behavior on websites or to track the performance of email marketing campaigns and collect user statistics about the webpage visits

 

Categorization of cookies

Based on the origin cookies can be categorized as: first-party cookies which are stored directly on the domain that the user is visiting and allow the owners of the website to collect data for analytical purposes, and enhance the browsing experience for the user by remembering the user settings. The other category involves third-party cookies which are stored under a different domain than the one that’s being visited. They are used to track users when switching between websites.

Another possible way to categorize cookies is based on their purpose. These categories include strictly necessary cookies, functional cookies, performance cookies and advertisement ones.  Only the strictly necessary cookies are essential for the website to function properly while the other categories are useful to improve the user experience, enhance visibility or for marketing purposes.”
