Mobility strategies are a key and structuring factor in social and territorial cohesion policies, economic development and environmental sustainability.
Decades of disinvestment, liberalisation, disruption of public transport services and their infrastructure — conditioned by EU guidelines — have changed the mobility paradigms, contributing to the degradation of services, higher prices, disorderly mobility and the abandonment of territories and populations.
Reinvesting in modern, comfortable, inclusive and efficient public transport with simplified, interoperable ticketing, with good territorial coverage, with reduced costs of use aiming progressive fare free transport, is key to changing transport use profiles by reducing the prevalence of private transport, helping to reduce the time and costs of commuting, connecting different regions, serving the public interest and increasing the quality of life of workers and populations.
This initiative should contribute to share experiences in promoting public transport, innovative instruments and the challenges that mobility is facing in the context of increasing urbanisation, touristification, energy transition, digitalisation or environmental threats.
