2024 will mark 50 years since the Turkish invasion right after the coup d’etat and subsequent occupation of 37% of Cyprus, which led to a de facto division of the island and artificial division of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities. The TC community is an integral part of the Cypriot people, and hence, while the conditions of the unacceptable status quo persist, we need to continue and intensify the work of rapprochement and enhance trust between the two communities; at the same time, aim to improve the lives of the TC community, curb the attempts to assimilate it, both culturally and economically, to Turkiye. In the face of new fait accomplish created by Turkiye, as is the opening of the fenced-off area of Varosha, which negatively affects the prospects for a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem, AKEL pursues both the work of rapprochement and of creating incentives (e.g. exploiting the hydrocarbons found in the EEZ of Cyprus) to help break the deadlock and create conditions for the resumption of substantive negotiations. Following elections in Cyprus, Greece and Turkiye, the event aims to present The Left’s proposals for the way forward.
