On September 23, Israel unleashed all of its military power over Lebanon, in complete disregard of Lebanon’s sovereignty, human rights and international law. Bombs hit civilians, residential areas, medical personnel or ambulances.

Over 490 have been killed and at least 1,600 wounded in a day. Tens of thousands of Lebanese are fleeing their homes to avoid succumbing under Netanyahu’s bombs.

Israel’s far-right government is plunging the entire region into misery and chaos, with the complicity – and in some cases support – of its western allies. How many lives must be lost for the international community to act? Europe cannot be complicit in this massacre. The EU must act now. We have been calling for the suspension of the EU’s trade and association agreement with Israel and demand an immediate and unconditional arms embargo on Israel.

The Left MEPs condemn Israeli attack and express their indignation against the military violence, whether it is happening in the West Bank, Gaza or Lebanon.

Left co-chair Manon Aubry (La France Insoumise, France) commented: “New massacre by the Israeli army in Lebanon with more than 490 dead and thousands injured. Netanyahu’s far-right government is leading the region towards disaster and chaos. The deafening silence of France and the EU is culpable: it is time to finally sanction these daily violations of international law!”

Left MEP Kostas Arvanitis (Syriza, Greece) said:”The European Union must act now to stop the aggressive war that has taken on the character of genocide and has been going on for a whole year. Alongside its irresponsible stance in Ukraine, the leadership of Europe continues its hypocritical silence on the war crimes of the far-right Israeli government of Netanyahu.”

“The dignity of humanity depends on our ability to stop these genocidal criminals, despite the shameless support they receive from our elites in Europe.” said Left MEP Irene Montero (Podemos, Spain).

“Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. An Israeli minister threatens to do the same in the West Bank. Another speaks of annihilating Lebanon, where massacres of civilians are beginning. Yet the EU continues to support Israel as if nothing is happening” denounced Left MEP Marc Botenga (PTB, Belgium).

Civilians are not a target. The EU can no longer remain silent; we must stop this horror now.
