On January 1, 2025, Poland assumed the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union, succeeding Hungary for a six-month term. In 2017, Poland was sanctioned by the European Commission for breaches of the rule of law. Although this sanction was lifted in 2024, concerns remain, particularly regarding the slogan “Security, Europe” chosen by the country, which raises additional worries.
The Polish government’s priorities for the Council include “security, migration control, and defense.” Last October, Poland caused outrage by announcing its intention to suspend the right to asylum. Equally shocking, the European Commission approved this measure, which flagrantly violates fundamental human rights. This decision is scandalous in every respect and utterly disregards the values of the European Union. This persecution of refugees and, people-on-the-move bolsters and flatters the narrative of the far-right but does not respect any Convention.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Poland has chosen to focus on competitiveness without addressing workers’ rights, not even a word. The slogan for this presidency might as well be “More money, less rights.” Europe is facing a social crisis, exacerbated by the rich and big corporations. As a result, more and more people are unable to afford heating or sufficient food. Addressing these inequalities requires only political will, specifically, the will to tax the rich and super-profits. However, this notion does not sit well with the friends of capital.
Another cause for concern is women’s rights, particularly the right to a safe and legal abortion. This right has been significantly curtailed, as abortion is now only legal in cases of rape or a danger to the woman’s life. Poland remains one of the most restrictive countries in the EU, a position that has been condemned by activists and The Left. The removal of safe and legal access to abortion for all endangers women’s lives, despite the brave efforts of Polish women campaigning for the right to make choices about their own bodies.
The right to a safe and legal abortion is non-negotiable, and the EU presidency must not become a platform for exporting Poland’s regressive policies to the European stage.
Even more, the timing of Poland’s presidency is noteworthy, as it coincides with the run-up to national elections. Donald Tusk, affiliated to the EPP Group in the European Parliament, is expected to use this period to bolster his political party, European citizens cannot be held hostage to the political ambitions of one man.
This vision is not ours and never will be. The Left will always stand with the people to fight for social and climate justice. There can be no compromise that serves the few at the expense of the many.
