In addressing key infrastucture issues for the region, the Partnership (referred to as PRIMA) also aims to address the migration challenge.
“Armed conflict, political instability, climate change, unsustainable resource management and growing populations are all major factors that contribute to migration.
“Similarly, access to food water and sanitation is of paramount political, social and economic importance in the region.
“These huge challenges are inextricably linked and that is why PRIMA is one of the rare efforts examples of EU Science Diplomacy which I believe can contribute to helping the inhabitants of the Mediterranean to avoid their forced displacement.
“It is perhaps a gleam of light; a small but important victory,” the Greek MEP remarked after the vote.
“The final text reflects GUE/NGL's key positions on exclusive focus on civil application, on the respect of fundamental rights and on the right to water and sanitation.
“However, despite my satisfaction I cannot but underline the obvious: the phenomenon of migration is of such grand magnitude that this initiative or similar ones, though necessary, are but a drop in the ocean compared to the size of the problem that needs to be addressed,” Sakorafa concludes.
