PROTECTING THE TRUTH: Safety for Journalists and Whistleblowers
In memory of the courageous Maltese journalist, Daphne Caruana Galizia, GUE/NGL MEPs and members of the ‘Panama Papers’ Inquiry Committee, Stelios Kouloglou, Miguel Urban, Patrick Le Hyaric, Martin Schirdewen, Takis Hadjigeorgiou, as well as Javier Couso, hosted an informative evening of discussions and documenatries on 30th January on the difficulties and dangers currently facing journalists and whistleblowers in Europe. The gathering featured contributions from Daphne Caruana Galizia's sons, Andrew and Matthew, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, LuxLeaks reporter and ICIJ member Edouard Perrin, plus Reporters Without Borders' Julia Majerczak.
It was also announced during the evening that a memorial prize named in honour of Daphne Caruana Galizia is to be inaugurated by GUE/NGL that will support, disseminate and help protect whistleblowers, journalists and defenders of the right to information. The annual prize will be worth 5000 euros.
