Cypriot GUE/NGL MEP Neoklis Sylikiotis has today called for the EU's Energy Security Strategy to recognise that all people should have equal and low-cost access to energy, an essential human right.

He was speaking in a debate on the issue in Parliament's Industry, Research, and Energy committee this morning.

Sylikiotis, shadow rapporteur for the Group on the issue, said: “We must underline the need to fight against the new phenomenon of energy poverty which today plagues many countries and regions of Europe. We should also emphasise the need to promote measures in order to lift the isolation of states or regions from the major energy networks.”

He concluded: “The EU should utilise the prospects which are created by the energy resources in the East Mediterranean, particularly in the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of Cyprus.”
