The Left in the European Parliament denounces the EU’s alarming appeasement of Viktor Orbán’s far-right government, signaling a dangerous compromise on democratic values.

Cohesion funds had been frozen over concerns about human rights and the rule of law in Hungary. But now the European Commission has unblocked €10.2 billion for Orbán’s regime, known for assaults on fundamental rights and the rule of law.

The Left strongly opposes the European Commission’s willingness to yield to the Hungarian government’s manipulative pre-Summit tactics, expressing concerns over the potential exacerbation of Hungary’s democratic decay.

Orbán poses a direct threat not only to fundamental rights in Hungary but across Europe. The ramifications of rewarding him in this way will be felt for decades.
