Une délégation du groupe de la Gauche Unitaire Européenne – Gauche Verte Nordique du Parlement européen, présidée par Patrick Le Hyaric (Viceprésident du Groupe – Front de Gauche – France) et composée par Alda Sousa (Bloco de Esquerda – Portugal) et Giorgos Toussas (KKE – Grèce) a participé à la Conférence internationale “Freedom and Dignity” qui a eu lieu les 27 et 28 avril à Ramallah, à l'occasion du 11ème anniversaire de l'arrestation de Marwan Barghouthi, parlementaire palestinien détenu et emprisonné dans les prisons israéliennes.

La réunion internationale “Freedom and Dignity” a soulevé les conditions dans lesquelles sont détenus les prisonniers palestiniens par Israël, en violation flagrante du droit international, ainsi que le rôle politique que ceux-ci ont dans le processus de paix israélo-palestinien.

Dans les différents panels, auxquels les plus de 100 représentants internationaux présents ont participé, les sujets des conditions des prisonniers palestiniens, les violations par l'Etat d'Israël de la 4ème convention de Genève, les conditions de détention des prisonniers, les obstacles aux soins de santé pour les prisonniers dont plus de 1000 y ont décédé sans avoir accès aux soins élémentaires, le processus d'unification palestinien, les prochaines élections en Palestine ont été discutés.

Patrick Le Hyaric (France) a appelé, au nom du groupe GUE/NGL, a une campagne  internationale de libération immédiate de tous les prisonniers palestiniens, et notamment des parlementaires palestiniens, emprisonnés pour avoir défendu le droit à la terre, pour avoir dénoncé les colonies et l'occupation des terres palestiniennes par un Etat occupant, Israël.    Cette campagne serait menée par les élus des différents pays pour la libération de Marwan Barghouthi, symbole de la lutte contre l'apartheid israélien et qui joue un rôle important dans l'avenir politique et d'unification de la société palestinienne. 

Patrick Le Hyaric a aussi rappelé l'importance de l'adoption de la résolution du Parlement européen du 14 mars 2013 et des engagements pris par le Parlement européen concernant l'envoi d'une mission d'évaluation des conditions des prisonniers palestiniens.

Alda Sousa (Portugal) a rappelé que l'Union européenne, qui dit se soucier des droits humains, ne fait pas preuve de la même inquiétude vis-à-vis des droits des Palestiniens et a demandé qu'un appel soit lancé aux niveaux des parlementaires européens et nationaux afin de faire pression pour que soient annulés tous les accords commerciaux impliquant les produits fabriqués par Israël dans les territoires occupés ainsi que tout autre accord tant que les droits du peuple Palestinien, y compris des prisonniers, ne soient pas respectés tel que le stipule l'article 2 des accords conclus avec l'UE.

Giorgos Toussas (Grèce) a déclaré que les développements dans toute la région du Moyen Orient et du Sud Est de la Méditerranée sont très dangereux et pourraient déclencher un conflit militaire généralisé.
Giorgos Toussas a exprimé sa profonde préoccupation concernant la situation des milliers de prisonniers politiques palestiniens dans les prisons israéliennes et toute sa solidarité dans la lutte des Palestiniens pour la création d'un Etat palestinien indépendant, viable et souverain dans les frontières de 1967 et avec Jérusalem-Est comme sa capitale.
Il a demandé la libération immédiate de tous les prisonniers politiques palestiniens ainsi que les autres prisonniers politiques qui sont maintenus dans les prisons israéliennes.

A European United Left/Nordic Green Left delegation, lead by Patrick Le Hyaric (Vice President of the Group – Front de Gauche – France) and made up of Alda Sousa (Bloco de Esquerda – Portugal) and Giorgos Toussas (KKE – Greece), participated in the international conference 'Freedom and Dignity' which took place on the 27 and 28 April in Ramallah, to mark the 11th anniversary of Palestinian prisoner Marwan Barghouthi's detention.

'Freedom and Dignity' highlighted the conditions Palestinian prisoners are subjected to in Israeli prisons and how these are a blatant violation of international law, as well as the political role these prisoners play in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

The different panel sessions were attended by over 100 international representatives and subjects discussed included: conditions for Palestinian prisoners; Israeli violation of the 4th Geneva Convention; barriers to healthcare in prisons (over 1000 prisoners have died in detention due to a lack of access to basic care); the process of Palestinian unity; and the upcoming Palestinian elections.

On behalf of the GUE/NGL, Patrick Le Hyaric (France) called for an international campaign lead by elected representatives from different countries to fight for the immediate release of all Palestinian prisoners, including Palestinian parliamentarians imprisoned for defending the right to land and for denouncing Israeli settlements and the occupation of Palestinian land by an occupying State, Israel. First and foremost, the campaign would call for the release of Marwan Barghouthi, a symbol of the struggle against Israeli apartheid who plays an important role politically in the Palestinian struggle.

Patrick Le Hyaric also reminded participants of the importance of the adoption of the European Parliament Resolution of 14 March 2013 and the commitment made by the European Parliament to send a mission to assess the conditions Palestinian prisoners continue to face.

Alda Sousa (Portugal) underlined that in spite of the EU's vocal concern for human rights, its actions when it comes to the rights of Palestinians don't live up to the rhetoric. She called for an appeal to be launched among European and national parliamentarians to push for a cancellation of all agreements between the EU and Israel, including trade agreements involving products manufactured by Israel in the occupied territories, which would be in place so long as Palestinian's rights are not respected, such as the those set out in Article 2 of the agreements with the EU.

Giorgos Toussas (Greece) said that current developments across the Middle East and South East Mediterranean are very worrying and could lead to widespread military conflicts. He expressed his deep concern for the thousands of Palestinian political prisoners who remain in Israeli prisons and reiterated his support of the struggle for the creation of an independent viable and sovereign Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders and with East Jerusalem as its capital.
He also called for the immediate liberation of all Palestinians and other political prisoners who are currently being held in Israeli prisons.
