GUE/NGL MEPs have condemned the Spanish government's undemocratic ban on the displaying of republican symbols in the country.

“This is a completely unjustified ban and severely breaches the right to freedom of assembly and expression. Philip VI is being crowned as King and head of the Spanish State without any consultation or referendum. This is an attack on popular sovereignty and democratic principles,” said Spanish GUE/NGL MEP Willy Meyer.

The GUE/NGL express its support to the majority of citizens that demand a referendum and reiterates its condemnation of the mistreatments and abuses of the citizens' democratic right to freely show their support for a Republic.
