A GUE/NGL proposal to include a debate on the deadly attack on the Médecins sans Frontières (MSF) hospital in Kunduz, Afghanistan, last Saturday, was agreed by the European Parliament at the opening of this week's session this afternoon.

The debate will take place on Wednesday morning in the presence of High Representative for Foreign Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission Federica Mogherini.

GUE/NGL President Gabi Zimmer said: “The European Parliament needs to put its weight firmly behind the demand for a thorough investigation into this tragic attack perpetrated by the US armed forces, during which some 19 people were killed and many more were injured.”

The attack lasted one and a half hours in the early hours of the morning, despite the fact that the US forces and Afghani authorities had been informed of the hospital's location.

GUE/NGL MEP Kateřina Konečná added: “This issue is very important to our group and we are glad that European Parliament has shown its willingness to at least discuss it. But we must go further and insist on a full and independent investigation into this terrible incident.”
