Because of the very urgent and alarming situation in the South East of Turkey, members of the GUE/NGL group in the European Parliament today met co-mayors of three major Kurdish provinces, Mr Firat Anli, co-mayor of Diyarbakir, Ms Hatice Coban, co-mayor of Van, and Ahmet Turk, co-mayor of Mardin.

In view of the forthcoming plenary debate on the situation in the South East of Turkey with Ms Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the Union, scheduled for tomorrow afternoon, the GUE/NGL has set out the following urgent demands:  that the curfews be lifted immediately; that there is an immediate ceasefire and an end to the military and police violence; that  there is an end to EU's silence in the face of this appalling massacre of the Kurds; and, that the EU play the role of mediator in order to bring the conflicting parties back to the negotiating table.

GUE/NGL MEPs will reiterate these demands during tomorrow afternoon's debate.
