GUE/NGL MEPs called on the European Union to stop interfering in the internal affairs of Venezuela during a debate last night in the European Parliament.

This came after speeches by the EU's High Representative for foreign policy and MEPs urging a more active approach towards Venezuela, which GUE/NGL MEPs condemn.

Spanish MEP, Javier Couso Permuy, denounced the double-standards approach adopted by the EU on foreign policy: “This is the eighth time we have spoken out against Venezuela. I was a member of Parliament during the terrible bombing of Gaza where five hundred children were killed and there was no resolution!”

“Now the European Union prefers to assume dark destabilizing agendas instead of defending democratic institutions threatened today in Brazil and Venezuela. Stop interfering in the affairs of Venezuela!” he concluded.

Portuguese MEP, João Pimenta Lopes, firmly criticized the worst practices of interference imposed on Venezuela by the monopolist oligarchies, supported by the US and the EU and called on the EU to respect the will of the Venezuelans to build a future based on economic development that puts peoples' needs first.

“These arguments,” he said, “bother all those who advocate austerity policies, impoverishment and the neo-colonial exploitation of third countries.”

“The sovereign will of the people for fair ideals will win. So it will be in Venezuela!”  MEP Pimenta Lopes concluded.
