The GUE/NGL delegation to the trial of HDP co-leader Figen Yüksekdağ was prevented from entering the courthouse in Ankara this morning.

Along with Italian MEP, Eleonora Forenza, human rights lawyers and parliamentarians from other European countries were barred by Turkish riot police and security personnel from observing the trial of the HDP co-leader.

Forenza wishes to denounce the presence of such heavy security for a trial that is supposed to be public and transparent, and has criticised the Turkish state for its authoritarianism with regards to the proceedings.

She has also vowed to return to the courthouse tomorrow (7th December) for the trial of Yüksekdağ’s colleague and fellow HDP co-leader, Selahattin Demirtaş, and is hopeful that the regrettable situation in Ankara from this morning will not be repeated tomorrow.
