In a plenary vote today, MEPs adopted a Resolution denouncing alleged illegal CIA operations in Europe.

GUE/NGL MEP Marie-Christine Vergiat said: “Today I'm satisfied that this Resolution has been adopted as it calls for everyone to finally stand up and take responsibility and for the victims to finally get the redress they deserve.

“This vote has finally been obtained with a large majority despite attempts by the EPP, supported by the rest of the right-wing in the EP, to change the nature of the Resolution.”

She continued: “Just over a year ago we adopted a text on illegal CIA operations in Europe. It was a crucial milestone that contained clear recommendations for trying to establish who was responsible for this sinister CIA programme carried out on European territory. But one year on and several reports later and we've not really moved forward at all, most of the recommendations have not been followed up and the legal enquiries have not really made much progress.”

“Human rights violations are never acceptable, particularly when it is states that carry them out,” added Vergiat. “The fight against terrorism should never justify violations of human rights. We need justice to make certain that they don't occur again. Ten years on it is high time.”
