This afternoon in plenary, GUE/NGL MEP Javier Couso Permuy took the floor in a debate on the current situation in Iraq.

He said: “We know that the situation in Iraq is not the result of some natural disaster, but friends of impunity don't like memory. There are crimes of aggression that have been committed in this intervention.

“Iraq is today unstable with sectarian and ethnically motivated violence. The Iraqi government is using its national army as a sectarian militia.

“We need to stop all interference from distant and nearby countries. Within a UN framework, the people of Iraq must adopt a new constitution for their country. Only the Iraqi people can decide how to use their own resources.”
