Spanish MEP, Miguel Urbán, is currently participating in an international mission to Honduras on the subject of the murder of indigenous activist, Berta Cáceres.

Berta Cáceres was an environmental activist and indigenous leader of the Lenca people, who was shot and killed in her own home on March 3.

The 'Justice for Berta' mission plans to hold meetings with Honduran authorities to seek clarification of the details of the assassination, and to visit Cáceres' family in La Esperanza, Intibucá.

“We call for the establishment of an independent international commission to investigate the murder of the indigenous leader and for the immediate release of the Mexican activist Gustavo Castro, who witnessed the crime and is still unable to leave Honduras”, explains Miguel Urbán.

“The delegation to Honduras has adopted the demands of Berta Cáceres' family, regarding the investigation of her murder, and also calls for the immediate suspension of the Agua Zarca dam project and the cancellation of all concessions to private companies on Lenca land,” adds Urbán.

The 'Justice for Berta' mission has the support of the Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH), the National Network of Human Rights Defenders in Honduras, as well as other NGOs and local and international human rights associations.

The mission arrives in the Honduran capital, Tegucigalpa, today and will remain in the country until this Sunday, March 20.
