Thirty-five Members of the European Parliament from the European United Left / Nordic Green Left have signed their support for World People’s Conference on Climate Change and Defense of Life to be held in Cochabamba, Bolivia, from October 10 to 12, 2015.

The conference in Bolivia aims to provide a platform for leaders of social movements, academics, scientists, government officials and representatives from all continents to agree on proposals to be put to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 21) which will be held in Paris in November.

Spanish MEP Estefania Torres Martinez will attend the conference in Bolivia on behalf of the GUE/NGL Group.

Ms Torres Martinez comments: “It is a great honour for me to participate in this conference as a representative of the GUE/NGL Group. I expect to return with some relevant high-level proposals to be introduced on the COP21 agenda in Paris.”

“It is essential that Southern people have a voice in the upcoming summit in Paris and that they put pressure on the highly industrialised countries that have greater responsibility in the fight against climate change.

“We, from the European left, and environmentally conscious people from highly industrialised countries should also strongly support them in their fight against the commodification of nature and the introduction of financial mechanisms that are speculating with their countries' resources.”
