GUE/NGL has condemned political arrests made in the Basque Country today.

Four members of Etxerat, an association working to defend the basic rights of prisoners and their families, have been detained by the Spanish Guardia Civil.

One of the activists arrested had taken part in an Etxerat delegation to the European Parliament little under one month ago. Etxerat was received by representatives of almost all parliamentary groups, including GUE/NGL, who conveyed its unwavering commitment to the defence of fundamental rights.

Of the other three detained activists, one is an Etxerat spokesperson who met with the President of the Basque Government Iñigo Urkullu one month ago. The other two activists are medical workers who provide psychological care for Basque prisoners and their relatives.

GUE/NGL MEPs condemn this operation against associations and individuals working in defence of basic rights of prisoners and their families.

Today's unsettling events follow on from the arrest of a dozen Basque lawyers in January, when GUE/NGL issued a statement demanding the respect of all fundamental rights, including the right to defend prisoners in an EU member state.

Yesterday, a ceremony was held in the European Parliament to mark the 5th anniversary of the Brussels Declaration that launched the peace process. MEPs urged the Spanish Government to engage in the consolidation of the open peace process in the Basque Country.

The GUE/NGL group expresses its support to this process, which aims to resolve the conflict by peaceful and democratic means, in line with the demands of the international community and the European Parliament. The way to achieve this is to respect fundamental rights, more democracy and the rule of law, and strengthen, rather than weaken, the process to achieve peace.

GUE/NGL urge al Estado español a respetar derechos básicos y democráticos

Tras la detención de una docena de abogados vascos en enero pasado, GUE/NGL emitía un comunicado en el que exigía que se respetaran todos los derechos fundamentales, como el derecho a la defensa de los presos, en un Estado miembro de la Unión Europea.

En marzo, una delegación de Etxerat visitó el Parlamento Europeo, donde fue recibida por representantes de casi todos los grupos de la Cámara, incluido GUE/NGL, que les transmitió su compromiso inquebrantable en la defensa de los derechos fundamentales.

Una de las personas que participó en dicha delegación ha sido detenida hoy, junto con una portavoz de Etxerat que celebró hace un mes una reunión con el presidente del Gobierno vasco, Iñigo Urkullu, y dos personas más integrantes del colectivo de profesionales del ámbito médico que presta atención psicológica a los presos y presas vascas. Esta operación se dirige contra asociaciones y personas que trabajan en defensa de derechos básicos de los presos y de sus familiares.

Ayer, un grupo de personalidades internacionales de primer orden recordaron en un acto celebrado en el Parlamento Europeo el quinto aniversario de la Declaración de Bruselas que lanzó el proceso de paz, y pidieron al Gobierno español que dé pasos para consolidar el proceso de paz abierto en Euskal Herria.

GUE/NGL expresa su apoyo decidido  a ese proceso, que tiene como objetivo la resolución del conflicto por vías pacíficas y democráticas, en línea con los llamamientos de la comunidad internacional y del Parlamento Europeo. El camino para lograrlo es el respeto a los derechos fundamentales, más democracia y estado de derecho, y fortalecer, en vez de debilitar, el proceso para conseguir la paz.
