The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People is observed every year on 29 November and was instituted by the UN General Assembly in 1977.
Its celebration is particularly poignant this year as it takes place just a few months after the Palestinian flag was raised at the UN headquarters in New York.
GUE/NGL MEP Martina Anderson, Chair of the European Parliament's Delegation for Relations with Palestine, comments:
“Ahead of International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian people I would like to reiterate my call to place Palestine and its people under international protection. The occupiers will not protect the occupied.
“Israel's blockade of Gaza must end. Israel's settler activity and terror must end. The collective punishment of Palestinian youths must end. The occupation must end.
“Genuine progress towards a peaceful two-state solution cannot be made in a climate of fear and intimidation.”
