A few days before local elections, Turkish Prime Minister Erdoğan has taken the decision to clamp down on freedom of expression by blocking Twitter.

GUE/NGL President Gabi Zimmer condemned this move in the strongest possible terms: “Banning social media and shutting out millions of users is an assault on democratic values in a democratic society.

“In a democratic society there is no place for restrictions on freedom of expression. This is a clear attempt by the Turkish government to silence dissenting voices.

“We call for an immediate reopening of access to Twitter.”
