GUE/NGL reiterates opposition to the appointment of Arias Cañete as Climate and Energy Commissioner.

Speaking after the vote on Arias Cañete's candidature for the European Commission, Spanish GUE/NGL MEP Paloma López regretted that the S&D (Social Democrat) group supported his nomination.

 

“Even Cañete's clear conflict of interest and regressive environmental record have not deterred the socialists from supporting his nomination along with the EPP (centre right) MEPs. It is clear that bipartisanism rules in Europe, as it does in our own Member States”, she added.

Following the two European Parliament hearings and despite attempts to reassure some MEPs, Spanish MEP Teresa Rodriguez-Rubio added that the GUE/NGL would remain steadfast in its opposition to the appointment of Arias Cañete to the role of Climate and Energy Commissioner.

 

The group's opposition is based on the following reasons:

1. Despite the controversial and superficial report of the JURI committee that didn't show an absence of a conflict of interest and that violates the Code of Ethics of the committee, Cañete is part of a family holding company that still owns two oil companies and a third of the Panamanian subsidiary of CEPSA, one of the corporate giants in the oil sector. His family relationship goes beyond marriage. Arias Domecq is a holding company also questioned for their activities in tax havens. To say that the interests of a political candidate's family could not influence his political decisions is abusing the letter of European law.

2. Arias Cañete apologised during his hearing for his macho campaign statements, but statements show that he is not just guilty of such sexism but has also known prejudices towards non-EU immigrant populations. The defence of equality and tolerance should be a prerequisite for a Commissioner of the European Union.

3. His “strong commitment to a sustainable energy model and climate” are counter to his practices as Minister which was characterised by limiting renewable energy practices, defence of fracking, deep water oil drilling or the exportation of Canadian tar sands. His CV is another example of his lack of ability to meet the commitments that the EU has in the short and medium term on Climate and the defence of a new energy model.

4. More than 570,000 people and 91 MEPs have signed petitions calling for the withdrawal of the candidacy of Cañete as Commissioner making him one of the most controversial of the proposed candidates for the Juncker Commission. Restoring the credibility and public confidence in the European institutions, from their recent low levels, forces us to back Commissioners whose career, status and commitment to the European project are unquestionable.

Desde el GUE/NGL queremos, una vez más, hacer público nuestro rechazo al nombramiento del Sr. Arias Cañete como Comisario de Acción Climática y Energía.

Nuestros motivos son claros:

1. Pese al controvertido y superficial informe de la comisión JURI no ha quedado demostrada la inexistencia de un conflicto de intereses que contravenga el Código Ético de la comisión. El señor Cañete forma parte de un holding familiar y empresarial que sigue siendo la propietaria de dos empresas petrolíferas así como de un tercio de la filial panameña de CEPSA, uno de los gigantes empresariales del sector del petróleo. Su relación familiar va más allá de un hecho sobrevenido en el matrimonio. Arias Domecq, además de una familia es un holding empresarial cuestionado además por sus actividades en paraísos fiscales. Entender que los intereses de la familia política del candidato no podrían influir en sus decisiones políticas es maltratar la letra de la normativa europea.

2. El Sr. Arias Cañete pidió disculpas en su audición por sus declaraciones machistas en campaña, pero son públicas declaraciones que demuestran que no sólo es un machista reincidente sino que también son conocidos sus prejuicios hacia la población inmigrante extracomunitaria. La defensa de la igualdad y la tolerancia deberían ser requisitos indispensables en un Comisario de la Unión Europea.

3. Su firme compromiso con un modelo energético sostenible y con el clima quedan en entredicho cuando sus prácticas como Ministro se caracterizaron por prácticas orientadas a la limitación de las energías renovables, la defensa del fracking, las prospecciones petrolíferas en aguas profundas o la exportación de arenas bituminosas de Canadá. Su currículum puesto sobre la mesa para avalar la idoneidad como Comisario es una muestra más de su falta de aptitud para afrontar los compromisos que la Unión Europea tiene a corto y medio plazo en la defensa del Clima y de un nuevo modelo energético.

4. Más de 570.000 personas y 91 Miembros del Parlamento Europeo han firmado sendas peticiones solicitando la retirada de la candidatura del señor Arias Cañete como Comisario convirtiéndolo en uno de los candidatos más controvertidos de la propuesta Juncker. Recuperar la credibilidad y la confianza de la ciudadanía en las instituciones europeas, tan malograda en los últimos tiempos, nos obliga a proponer comisarios cuya trayectoria, condición y compromiso con el proyecto europeo sean incuestionables.
