Condemning premature declarations of victory by US President Trump and his supporters, the Left in the European Parliament urges EU leaders to show caution and respect for democratic processes before any recognition of US election results.

The Co-Presidents of the Left also extended congratulations and solidarity to progressive members of congress who saw some significant wins.

Manon Aubry and Martin Schirdewan:

“Our deepest congratulations go to the champions of working people and progressive values that have been elected or returned to Congress today, especially the encouraging wins for the women of the ‘Squad’. Their voices have been, and will continue to be, a beacon of hope in the US and the rest of the world. We will soon reach out to them in order to enhance our mutual cooperation over the coming years.”

“Trump’s premature declaration of victory and similar declarations by the Slovenian Prime Minister undermine democracy and must not be allowed to distract from the electoral process. The EU must speak with one voice out of respect for all those who have cast their ballots, and in favour of a peaceful transfer of power in the event of a change of President.”
